Pennsylvania State Police Philadelphia Headquarters and Maintenance Garage
The new Pennsylvania State Police Philadelphia Headquarters and Maintenance Garage replaced a 50-year-old building with a modern, sustainable, and efficient facility on the same site. The complex includes administrative facilities and a five-bay municipal maintenance garage to service Troop K’s vehicle fleet. The exterior balanced mandated security solidity with visual interest. A ventilated curtain wall offers a sense of transparency while regulating HVAC usage. Ground-source heat pumps, energy-efficient systems, a green roof, and advanced stormwater management support sustainable design. The building plan maximizes security and troop efficiency with a primary bi-directional corridor through which personnel traverse between personal parking, locker and equipment rooms, and police vehicles (performing the route in reverse after shifts). A central open space on the administrative floor can function as a temporary regional command center during emergency events. The garage connects to the headquarters via an enclosed vehicle maintenance and circulation courtyard, for added security. A collaborative effort and phased construction brought the project to completion under budget and on a schedule accelerated midway to accommodate the Pope’s visit to Philadelphia.
