Batten House, Bryn Mawr College
BKP renovated the 15-person sustainability residence at Bryn Mawr College. Built in phases, the circa 19th century Batten House had last been renovated over three decades ago. Challenges ranged from confined spaces, dated aesthetics, and uneven floors and steps to a lack of modern life safety systems. The BKP renovation focused on ground level common area updates including floor height leveling for full ADA accessibility, a new communal kitchen opened to the living and dining areas, and two new private baths, plus the addition of fire suppression sprinkler systems throughout the building. Batten House residents encouraged a focus on sustainable design and reuse of existing materials. The renovation provides comfortable and environmentally conscious spaces that meet the programmatic needs of the communal home.
